APPLYING FOR ADMISSION
Admission Requirements

Admission to graduate study in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Washington is granted by the Dean of the Graduate School upon recommendation by the departmental Graduate Admissions Committee. This committee recommends admission for those students judged best qualified to benefit from the graduate program offered by the department. Admission to the department is competitive, and all components of a student's application will be considered in evaluating his or her eligibility for admission. Applicants to the graduate program should be well prepared and have a strong undergraduate GPA for the last 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours of graded undergraduate coursework to be considered for admission.

In determining the qualifications of an applicant for admission, the following factors are considered:
  1. The record of all prior academic work at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  2. Strong undergraduate GPA for the last 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours of graded undergraduate coursework.
  3. The results of the Graduate Record Examination.
  4. Recommendations from persons qualified to evaluate the applicant's academic record and promise as a graduate student and an engineer.
  5. Resume/curriculum vitae (C/V)
  6. Statement of objectives.
  7. English language proficiency scores, where applicable. See Application Details for more information.

Apply Online
Applications for graduate and graduate nonmatriculated students are submitted electronically through the Graduate School. Once there, you will need to create a new applicant profile, select your application type (graduate or graduate nonmatriculated), and choose "Applied Mathematics (MS) online" as the graduate program. You will be required to pay a nonrefundable application fee that is not credited against any other fees charged by the University. If the application fee is not received, the application will not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

In addition, depending on student status, certain materials may have to be submitted by mail to the Applied Mathematics department and/or the Graduate School.

An overview of the process is below. For more information on the required materials, see Application Details.
